Required: You are a financial analyst. You are required to research on individual stocks and provide investment portfolio analysis report on stocks and investment portfolio suggestions for the first quarter of 2016. You can collect data from Finance.yahoo.com, Morningstar.com, Fred.stlouisfed.org. To complete the report, you are required to conduct following analyses:
Part A (25 marks): Security analyses and selection. Please use a “top-down” approach to select stocks listed on NYSE/AMEX. You are required to complete two tasks: 1) Macro economy and industry analyses. Please write a summary on economic condition based on key economic indicators, e.g., GDP, CPI, unemployment rate. Please select three industries and provide the rationale and criteria used for selection (data supporting your rationale, e.g. industry growth, PE ratio; graphs describe historical industry growth and compare with other industries); 2) Company selection (within industry).
Part B (40 marks): Security performance tracking and portfolio construction. You are required to complete three tasks: 1) Stock performance tracking. Please record performance of the 20 stocks and calculate weekly profit gain or loss using an Excel Spreadsheet (see the Performance Tracking Spreadsheet template in Appendix B); 2) Portfolio construction. Please use the mean-variance (short sale is not allowed) approach taught in class to construct an investment portfolio using the 20 stocks selected in Part A. Assuming the portfolio has to be rebalanced every week (i.e. update weights on individual stocks each week) and the risk aversion parameter is ‘2’.
Part C (25 marks): Portfolio performance summary. Please use portfolio performance evaluation metrics to evaluate the performance of your portfolio and provide a written summary describing the performance of both individual stocks and the portfolio, discuss why the overall portfolio performed well or poorly, predict the future performance of each stock in your overall portfolio and offer suggestions to improve portfolio performance. You should consider growth measurements and further diversification.
